On the palate, spicy plum and raspberry flavors with a good balance of acidity and tannins. Production Method : The view from the top of Wylie Vineyard is unforgettable, and it was compelling enough to me, when I first saw it in 1998 (just before the vineyards' first grapes ripened) that I immediately decided I wanted to buy these grapes every year, forever. I wasn't disappointed, of course; the wine can be unforgettable, too. By then I already knew how good the Fenaughty Vineyard Syrah was; it made wine, from time to time, that echoed a distinct kinship with Cote Rotie, a revelation I'd savored for ten years. But whereas the Fenaughty showed violets, lavender, and pepper, all the pretty stuff Syrah can do, the Wyliehad the broodiness and power of Cornas—great, strong cherry and olive tones, and smokiness in reserve. The impulse to blend them proved irresistible; each made the other more complete, more satisfying. 2003 seems to have been the kind of year that emphasized the more elegant features these two sites have to offer; it's a beauty, unmistakably Wylie-Fenaughty.
